Chianti off the Beaten Path

Since Etruscan times viticulture and wine making gave popularity to this renowed wine region between Siena and Florence and today Chianti Classico is one of the most sold out wine all over the world.

The middle ages and the struggles for powers and land control resulted in the typical architecture made of fortified and walled villages like Radda, Gaiole, Castellina, Volpaia, castles like Castello di Brolio, Rocca di Castagnoli, Castello di Meleto, old abbeys like Badia a Coltibuono.

Once the noble families left from the cities to live in their countryside second homes 16th and 17th century villas spread out like Villa di Geggiano, Villa di Vistarenni, everything on hills in outstanding forests surrounded by vineyards and olive trees.

Running through the area, the scenic road SR222 which connects Florence and Siena so both cities are good home bases to consider a drive which allows several stop options along the way considering there are more than 200 wine and olive oil producers in big size or as family business, farms raising the local Cinta Senese pigs and wildboards.

DETAILED ITINERARY - HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CHIANTI REGION

Meeting at your hotel in Florence or Siena at around 9/9:30 in the morning.

We start a scenic drive along the chianti road SR. 222 to stop at a small off the beaten path village I chose for you and we'll talk about some historical facts of the area.

You will have plenty of time to take pictures along the way and then once we will reach the first selected winery, a very top-end, we will be welcomed by the owners and winemakers and we will visit together the cellars, after we will go back to the tasting room to sample Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, a Supertuscan wine, Vinsanto and/or grappa, extra virgin olive oil.

When lunch time arrives we will go to a small village in the Chianti area and we will have a lunch based on typical tuscan products but being on your own you can choose anything from the menu and I will be happy to help you in the selection and you will pay for what you eat, making this cost easy and clear to you.

Upon request a food & wine pairing at the winery can be included in your Chianti highlights experience.

At around 4:30/ 5 pm we will be ready to happily drive back home.
